Rich Dad Poor Dad

I read this book in 2009 having been married for roughly 2 years with a newborn baby boy and twins expected in April of 2010.  The plan was for my wife to go back to work after our first born was a little older.  However, with the twins coming, what was the point.  The money she would have made would have barely covered the daycare expenses for the three little ones in diapers.  So the decision for my wife to be a stay at home mom was kind of made for us.  It was tough but we have no regrets.

Needless to say my wife and I were scared about going from a dual income family with one child to a single income family with three children.  We knew severe lifestyle changes were in our future.  We also knew that we did not want to just get by.  This started our search for a different way and eventually we stumbled upon Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.

Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due

Rich Dad Poor Dad was published in 2000, so it has been around for almost twenty years.  I have never done a search but I can only imagine the amount of reviews and blog posts written about this book.  Regardless, I had to write this, even if it is just to give credit where credit is due.  Better yet, maybe someone out there will stumble upon this and be motivated to read it for the first time.  Either way, like I said, I had to put it out there.

I have a finance degree but I will never forget how much Rich Dad Poor Dad taught me.  Four years of college and none of the lessons in this book were ever explained.  At least not in a way that I could apply to my own personal finances.  Anyone can understand the concepts in Rich Dad Poor Dad and anyone can use them to change their life financially.  This book started us on our journey to escape from rat race prison.  After reading Rich Dad Poor Dad, we continued to educate ourselves and grow.  However, we would not have had anywhere near the success if it wasn’t for the foundations created by Rich Dad Poor Dad.

Teach Your Children about Money

My kids are not quite old enough to read this book and understand it yet but they do know about it.  We have talked about it in our house on several occasions.  I have actually offered each of them, when they are old enough, $300 to read the book and write a two page book report.  Rich Dad Poor Dad is a vital piece of information that each of my three kids will need to be successful.  Robert Kiyosaki expanded his concepts into other books, board games, and finally education and coaching.  I have read several of his books, all of which are good reads.  None had anywhere near the impact that Rich Dad Poor Dad made on our journey to financial freedom.

The board games on the other hand have become an excellent teaching tool and introduction to the concepts taught in Rich Dad Poor Dad for both adults and children.  I own both games shown in the photos.  The kids version of Cash Flow is a fantastic teaching tool for kids!  We play this game with our three children at least once a month.  It sparks great conversations that allow us to gently get their wheels turning about money.  Our goal is that our children start their adult life with the same understanding of money that my wife and I didn’t gain until much later in life.  It is never too late to start digging a tunnel out of rat race prison but it is certainly never too early to learn the concepts that may prevent you from ending up in the rat race in the first place.

Cashflow For Kids

The adult version of Cashflow is a bit complicated but is still a great teaching tool.  It is actually used by real estate investment clubs to teach the importance of buying income producing assets (passive income).  There are also groups out there that meet just to play the game as sort of a social club.  You can find these groups online or via a mobile app called “meet up”.  I have never been to a meet up group but I would assume that each one is different.  I was however exposed to the adult version of Cashflow through a real estate investment club.  It was a great time and prompted me to purchase my own copy of the game.
